Mechanical Parts Manufacturer Produces Robot Columns
The development of factory automation and intelligent production systems, and the emergence of smart factories have brought about great changes in manufacturing industries in recent times, creating an industrial structure in which human involvement is minimized. Such changes have dramatically increased the demand for industrial robots, and more parts manufacturers are increasingly entering the robot industry. Hyerin Machine, which initially focused on the manufacturing of mechanical parts, began to manufacture industrial robot columns towards the end of 2013,and has since become one of the leading manufacturers in that particular market category. Hyerin Machine’s CEO Hancheol Park stated: “I bought an NC boring machine in Daegu in 2001. I opened up a business in Daegu despite having no acquaintances there.I adopted high-priced machines, and the people around me were very concerned about whether I would be able to secure orders or not. But I believed that good machines would lead to good quality and the production of good products. Orders increased accordingly.” Thereafter Hyerin Machine adopted four more boring machines and two turning centers, expanding the manufacturing of machine tool parts to satisfy customers’ contracts. And, ten year after its founding in 1998, Hyerin Machine became a corporation.
With the saturation of the mechanical parts industry markets, orders were falling sharply, and exports and domestic sales were becoming insecure, leading to shrinkage of the industry. Hyerin Machine, based on its metal machining technology, entered the new business of manufacturing robot columns. To that end, CEO Park planned to manufacture the columns of single robots, the demand for which was increasing in the electronics and semiconductor industries, as well as in the transport sector. In November 2013, he thus purchased Doosan Machine Tools’ double-column machining center (DCM). CEO Park, who suffered due to labor costs and the difficulty of securing highly skilled workers, believed that Doosan’s 5-face machining tool could resolve the two problems of enhancing productivity and performing unmanned machining, and finally decided to purchase the machine.
Hyerin Machine, which initiated the fullblown production of columns in 2014, initially competed with other manufacturers, but as it built up customer trust on the basis of early delivery and excellent quality, it has now become the sole supplier of columns to Hyundai Heavy Industries. CEO Park stated: “Our high machining accuracy and competitive pricing are the main reasons why our customers have chosen our products.” He added that, in particular, the company could achieve machining accuracies to within 0.020 mm, boosting its precision and thereby enabling it to optimise competiveness.

Twenty Years of Strong, Reliable Partnerships
CEO Park, who is a veteran engineer, has maintained a strong partnership with Doosan for almost twenty years, ever since he bought universal boring machines from Doosan, which was then operated under the name of Daewoo Heavy Industries and Machinery. CEO Park stated. “In those days, homegrown machines, compared to Japanese and German products, were evaluated lower, which worried me when purchasing machines. I purchased Doosan’s machines, used them, and found them to perform satisfactorily. Afterwards, I continued to purchase Doosan’s machines.”
After installing a DCM on November 30, 2013, Hyerin Machine had one year of adjusting the machine to its working environment in order to maintain uniform machining deviation, leading it to secure a satisfactory level of machining accuracy. CEO Park added: “The machine itself is excellent and, hopefully, the peripheral devices will also prove to be satisfactory. As a good partner, we only ask that Doosan continue to pay meticulous attention to improving its machines to satisfy all its customers.”

 We Are Making Merchandise
Hyerin Machine, which is said to have already secured four years of orders for columns, also outsources some of its manufacturing work in order to meet its delivery deadlines to its customers. CEO Park stated: “Our competitors’ machines can manufacture 10 meters of columns per minute, while Doosan’s powerful machine can manufacture up to 16 meters per minute, thus covering more machining work in the same period of time. The competitors’ machine tools take an average of 16 hours to manufacture one column, while Doosan’s machine, boasting a faster ATC return time and minimum non-cutting time, takes an average of 14 hours to manufacture one column.” This shortened manufacturing time leads to enhanced productivity and reduced costs, thereby boosting operating profits, producing lower cost, but top-quality products, and optimising price competitiveness. Equipped with the best functions and engineering technology that boosts the performance of the machine, this machine is the bedrock that achieves Hyerin Machine’s high level of competitiveness. CEO Park added: “I want unmanned machining with less human involvement. The DCM, which offers uniform machining accuracy and long-time unmanned operation, is expected to serve that purpose.”
